Back to School Mickey Bars

Decorating Mickey Bars is one of my favorite ways to create a special treat without having to bake or make a big amount of anything. Let’s be honest, I don’t have anyone to give 11 cupcakes to or to share a big cake with. It’s just my little babe and mom & dad. Giving a pre-made treat a little glow-up just makes sense. Also, you know kids love to eat the same thing over and over again, so they’re happy with it!

Ingredients

  • Mickey Bars or any bars if you don’t want them Disney themed.
  • Melting chocolate or candy melts in white and if you wanna get fancy you can do regular chocolate color for the black and it will take much less dye.
  • Food colors
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Royal Icing

My tips for decorating Mickey Bars-

  • Work quickly because the chocolate hardens almost instantly. Melted chocolate + frozen bar.
  • Depending on your food coloring your chocolate might get thick and chunky. If that happens, you can easily thin it out by adding some vegetable shortening. I like to thin out my chocolate regardless for a smoother look. However, don’t thin it out too much or it won’t harden.
  • If you overheat your chocolate and it gets chunky, you can use the vegetable shortening trick again.
  • Try to make your hard 3D decorations before hand and then use your frosting or chocolate to “glue” them on to the bar. This way the decorations won’t harden on you as you work. Sometimes they just fall off because the Mickey bar cools down the chocolate too fast and doesn’t give it a chance to stick.
  • Use a photo for Reference or print out a picture of your design and put it under wax paper as a template to pipe your decorations.
